COURSE OVERVIEW

This intensive course equips primary healthcare providers with essential knowledge and practical skills for the assessment and management of patients presenting with vestibular complaints. Designed for doctors and allied health professionals in primary care settings, the programme bridges the clinical gap between otological (ENT) and neurological causes of dizziness and balance disorders.

Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, the course addresses both peripheral and central causes of vestibular dysfunction. Participants will gain a systematic framework for diagnosing and managing common vestibular conditions through a combination of lectures, case discussions, and hands-on practical sessions.

The curriculum emphasises evidence-based clinical practice while focusing on practical skills that can be directly applied in day-to-day clinical settings.

OBJECTIVES

The course aims to:

  • provide an integrated understanding of vestibular disorders relevant to primary care practice

  • strengthen clinicians’ ability to differentiate between peripheral and central causes of dizziness

  • introduce systematic diagnostic approaches including history-taking, examination, and investigations

  • enhance confidence in initiating appropriate management strategies and determining when specialist referral is required

  • equip participants with practical skills for bedside vestibular assessment and treatment manoeuvres

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • differentiate common peripheral vestibular disorders such as Ménière's disease, vestibular neuritis, and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) from central causes of vertigo

  • conduct structured history-taking and focused physical examinations for patients with dizziness

  • perform bedside vestibular assessment techniques including gait assessment and head impulse testing

  • interpret common vestibular investigations and understand indications for imaging

  • perform BPPV repositioning manoeuvres such as the Epley and Semont manoeuvres

  • apply evidence-based management strategies including pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments

  • recognise red flags that warrant specialist referral

SUITABLE FOR

  • otorhinolaryngologists

  • neurologists

  • paediatricians

  • geriatricians

  • family physicians

  • physiotherapists and

  • audiologists who manage patients with dizziness.

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS
